Given that Fluxus comes from the Latin word meaning "flow" or a "flowing," it is hard to pin down exactly when the movement officially began, but George Maciunas first used the word in 1961. The artists involved in the movement (including Yoko Ono, Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik to name a few) worked in various mediums, organizing festivals and concerts, amd also published material to support these events. This poster, for a concert at Carnegie Hall on September 25, 1965, features a repetitive field of masks which Maciunas had previously used on a Fluxus Manifesto. The names of the featured artists run around the outside of the image, and on the tongue of each mask is the name of one of the works being performed. The same image was also used on a leaflet to advertise the show. It is delightfully insolent and rare.
